October Phone Favorites

Oh, Hello November?! Where did OcTobler go?! This month was full of busy weekends, adventures and trying to soak up as much of the holidays as possible. I can't believe we are already to holiday season?!? Here is a round up of this months phone favorites.

I got some new glasses and I love them!

Millie hates her car seat and just screams so this is how we grocery shop. My hands are always full!

Sprout was at my feet while I was trying to make dinner. He wants to cook so badly. So I cut up some apple and gave him some cinnamon and sugar. He had a great time "cooking."

I got this dinosaur at Savers for $5!! It was going ot be a Christmas gift, but he found it and loved it, so I don't think I'll be able to take it away.

Family book time. Check this off my bucket list!! Be still my heart!

School Halloween Party.

Trunk or Treat at the Police Station. And that's a wrap on OcTobler. I can't believe another Halloween has come and gone!! Time to rock out my Birthday Month!!

Halloween

 As mentioned in my previous post this year E had two costumes. She really wanted to be an owl and I just couldn't refuse. She was so happy with her costume and we got a lot of compliments on it. Most people were in awe that I made their costumes. I think that home made costumes are a thing of the past. I just think it's so much fun!! 

 

The Dinosaur and the Owl. 

For our family theme this year we went with Jurassic Park. Duke really wanted to be a dinosaur and I thought it would be a fun challenge.

I can't really tell you how much I love this costume. Not only that, I love how much he loved this costume.

 

 The negotiation was that E would wear the Brontosaurs costume whenever we went out as a family, which was only on Halloween this year and she wanted so badly to be an owl, i decided to only have her dress up for pictures. I can't say I regret making this costume though. It turned out SO cute!!! I mean a complete waste of time and resources for a picture, but dang it was adorable!!

 I knew that Sprout wasn't going to wear a big head, so I just stitched on some spikes and eyes to his hoodie. Close enough and so cute!

 After pictures the kids went to change. Duke wore his head several times this Halloween, but it was pretty tricky to see out of and E was an owl. Here they are with Piper the neighbor.

 Sprout caught on  to the system really quick! He would just stand there with his bucket out and people would  keep giving him candy. He had quite the haul!!

 It was a happy Halloween and quite possibly my last year for Family costumes! Everyone is growing up much too quickly!

Costume Prep

This year was Duke's year to pick the family costumes. Duke decided that he wanted to be a dinosaur, however E was not impressed with that thought and she really wanted to be an owl. Here's how I figure, they only get so many Halloweens and while I really want to do a family costume, I really want E to be an owl as well. So we decided that if we were together as a family, we would do dinosaurs, and if we were at a school event ect, we would do individual costumes. So I set to work on an owl costume. 

 First the wings. I did it double layered so that the cape was less likely to stretch. So I cut out two wing capes.

I set the back side of the cape aside so I was only working with a single layer. I cut feathers out of dark grey, light grey and white felt. Some pieces I cut feather slits into to add variation and I stitched them on row by row. 

Once all the layers were complete I placed the back cape piece right sides together. I positioned a strip of velcro at the top of each shoulder to attach to the dress later. Stitch around, leaving a hole and turn right side out. Top stitch as desired.

Using one of her dresses as a pattern I cut out the silhouette for her dress.

And so the process began again! 

She is the cutest owl!

 I saw this post on Pinterest and I knew I just HAD to try and replicate it for Duke. I started with a diaper box and we took off!! 

 And then I realized that I made it WAY too big!

 We shrunk it down and added some details. 

 Then it came time to drape it with felt. 

 Home boy needs some teeth!!

I attached some elastic bands to the neck hole to put his arms through to add stability and I glued a foam board to the back of the neck. That piece went down the back of his shirt and was secured with another elastic band. 

 

I added some foam board teeth and a couple of dowels to help keep the mouth open. 

This kid was thrilled!!! I got the eyes from Joann Fabrics in the Halloween section. they were just too goo to be true!

 For E's brontosaurs costume, we started with a diaper box and made a cylinder. 

I molded the face with tin foil.

  Having learned a thing or two from constructing the T-Rex, I added some elastics around the arm holes for stability. They made a huge difference especially since hers was so tall!

 Draped it in felt. So cute!!

 

 I knew there was no way no how that Sprout was going to wear a big head, so I bought him a red hoodie and red sweats at the thrift store to match his tail and I stitched on some spikes and eyes to his hoodie. Keep it simple sister!! 

 I really can't tell you how much I love how these turned out. It was a learning curve. I've never done a big head before for anything but I had a blast making them and the kids were soooo cute!
