Sesame Street Quiet Book - The Summary

This is it, the finale! It has been a very busy week full of quiet book action. Here is a summary of all of my pages and information regarding my quiet book and a flash back to related posts from my previous quiet book. Just click on the link to view more pictures. Sesame Street Quiet Book - The Page

Here are some details about my pages. I cut my pages out of a cotton fabric. Depending on the book I use quilting fabric or just solid colors. To make the pages stiff and to help keep everything in place when doing all of the embroidery I use the heaviest iron on interfacing I can find. I cut my pages at 11x11 and I cut the interfacing at 10x10. I do this so that the interfacing does not end up in the final seam to avoid additional bulk.  

To finish my pages I like to add ric rac around the edges. It adds some some color and texture and I am a big fan. To do this take the ric rac and start at a corner. Stitch down the center of the ric rac 1/2" from the outside edge of your fabric. Stitch all the way around. Be sure that you match BOTH the thread and the bobbin thread to the color of your ric rac.

Stitching down the center will give you that cute zig zag edge once we flip it over. 

Once you have stitched all the way around be sure to back stitch. This is how it should look on the back. You will be using the red thread as a guide to stitch along in a few minutes. You can do it with white as well but I like the bright color so that you can see it better. 

What it should look like from the top.

You are now going to put the two completed pages right sides together. Pin around the edges so that everything stays in place when you stitch around.There is nothing worse than a crooked page!

You are now going to stitch around three sides of your page EXACTLY on top of that colored sewing line you stitched earlier.

Be sure to leave the bottom open so that you can flip it right side out. 

Clip your top two corners so they will be nice and crisp once you flip it right side out. 

Flip it right side out. 

Pin the bottom of the page closed. Press the page to get all of those seams nice and flat. 

Top stitch around the outside edge of the page to finish it up. 

Remember to switch thread colors when top stitching on characters. You may need to change your bobbin thread if the character is on the underside of the page. That is how I finish my pages. :)

I also add grommets on each page so that I can put them together with book rings. They are very simple to apply and I like how clean they look. I hope that you enjoyed this tutorial. All of my quiet book pages are available at my Etsy shop.

Sesame Street Quiet Book - Oscar the Grouch

Who doesn't love Oscar the Grouch? This was my last page to complete and I think we ended on a high note! 

Oscar was interesting to assemble. There was lots of tacking here and lifting there to get everything to sit right. I love his little hands and eye brows though. He came out quite handsome. 

The trash. Originally I had planned on having different colored slime/ blobs for the kids to match the color. I cut them out set them on the page and the page went from looking fabulous to looking cheap and rushed. I couldn't do it which was frustrating because I had already written on the fabric saying "Match the Slime." instead of "Match the Trash."  I was ready to be done with this quiet book but I had to do it right so I give you, the trash. 

The fish, This guy makes the page. I totally love him!

Another favorite, the Apple core which had to be done entirely by hand but it was so worth it! 

I embroidered around each item so that E could match them up.

Like I said before I had already written "Match the slime the SCRAM!" in pen (my evaporating marker is packed away somewhere) so I attempted to erase it with rubbing alcohol. It worked, sort of. It made a mess of things and instead of risking ruining Oscar I just made a patch and covered it up. Oscar is trashy anyways so I didn't mind having a patch job :).

As an after though Jakob suggested that I add Slimy. Jakob is actually quiet involved in my creations adding imput here and there. I am so thankful of his support and encouragement.

Sesame Street Quiet Book- Count von Count

What is more perfect than counting with Count von Count? I made The Count a two page spread as well.

Sewing him together was a mental exercise. At one point I was stitching through 7 layers of felt and cotton. This was an intirucut pattern but I think he came out brilliantly. 

Once I had sewn him to my cotton background I thought he needed a little web up in the corner. I hand embroidered the web on and the I added the ric rac. It had to be exact. Thankfully everything lined up on the first try!

I love all of the little details, the monocle, the eye lids, the eye lash. I think he looks great! 

For the activity I wanted to have the kids count things. I decided to go with bats. I added one of the bats to the page with Count on it. 

I put the other four on the second page along with the words. 

Each little bat has googly eyes that I sewed on by hand. Glue wouldn't sick and I really wanted to have eyes. Hopefully these will last awhile!

E is getting really good at snaps. I think if I were to do this page again however I would use Velcro to make things simpler.

Sesame Street Quiet Book - Elmo

Ahhh, Elmo! E's favorite! This is her favorite page, as I am sure you could imagine. I wanted to make this book very simple so that a two year old could do it with little to no help. 

Elmo's eyes, nose and mouth come off. They are secured with Velcro. E really enjoys taking his face off and mixing up the pieces. I like that it is a puzzle, and that Duke can learn the words eyes, nose and mouth better.

 

The bare face. This page whipped up very quickly. The longest part was the hand embroidery. It was such a change from my church quiet book.
